House of the Dragon

Still one of the best things HBO's put out. Season 1 is a brutal slow burn — watching Rhaenyra and Alicent go from best friends to wanting each other dead hurts, and it all traces back to Viserys deciding he needed a son. Paddy Considine is fucking incredible as Viserys, this pathetic dying king who genuinely loves his daughter but keeps failing her at every turn. And that finale — Luke and Arrax getting eaten by Vhagar — is as gut-wrenching as anything in the original show.

Season 2 takes the political route and I really liked it. Blood and Cheese sets the tone early: this isn't a story with good guys. Rook's Rest is the highlight though — Rhaenys and Meleys going toe-to-toe with Sunfyre, then Aemond pulling a sneak attack on his own brother with Vhagar? Absolutely insane. Best dragon fight in the franchise by a mile. Daemon's whole Harrenhal thing was fine; the payoff with his vision connecting to the prophecy was cool even if the haunted castle stuff overstayed its welcome a bit.

Matt Smith is still the most magnetic guy on screen — Caraxes is a menace. Emma D'Arcy really grew into Rhaenyra this season, and Olivia Cooke's Alicent is heartbreaking as she slowly realizes the war she helped start is eating her family alive. That final scene between them on Dragonstone where she quietly agrees to sacrifice Aegon is some of the best dialogue in the whole series. Hope S3 keeps the momentum.
